Bhagavad Gita for Modern World: Chapter 1 Verse 36

Verse 1.36 explained

Translation

We will be cursed(i.e get Paap- accumulate bad karma) , if we kill these aggressive people. It wouldn’t be apt to kill Dhritarashtra’s sons and our own relatives and friends.

Tell me O, Madhava, the dark on, (Krishna), How can we ever be happy by killing our own family?

Commentary:

Arjun was aware that the Kurava camp was thirsty for his blood, but still, he believed that it wouldn’t be right to kill them.

Arjun’s basic premise was that killing his own family and loved ones could never bring anyone any happiness. And after all,

Happiness is the goal of all Goals.

This verse mentions a word called Atatayi.

What does Atatayi mean?

Atatayi is a Sanskrit word which refers to someone who willfully causes you harm, by trying to kill you, and harms you physically or financially, or emotionally.

Atatayi are of 6 types: one who

1. Poisons you
2. Attacks you
3. Burns your house
4. Steals your money
5. Steals your property
6. Abducts your wife/woman
